Restoration of a Cracked Turbine Runner Blade Using Laser Cladding Technology

The turbine runner is a critical component of a hydropower unit, directly exposed to the force of water during operation. After years of service, turbine runner blades can suffer from wear, cavitation, corrosion, and long, deep cracks, affecting the equipment’s durability and operating performance.

In this project, Phuong Dong restored a cracked turbine runner blade using Laser Cladding technology, instead of replacing the entire component.

Restoration Process

1. Crack Removal

The damaged area is cleaned and ground along the entire crack, following its actual length and depth, to completely remove the cracked material before restoration welding.

2. Laser Cladding

After the crack has been removed, the damaged area is rebuilt using Laser Cladding technology.

The material is deposited layer by layer with high precision, creating a strong metallurgical bond with the base material and restoring the lost metal.

3. Inspection and Finishing

After cladding, the repaired area undergoes Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to evaluate the internal quality.

The surface is then ground and machined to the required profile, followed by Penetrant Testing (PT) to verify the surface quality and ensure there are no surface defects.

Advantages of Laser Cladding

Compared with conventional welding repair methods, Laser Cladding provides lower heat input and a smaller heat-affected zone (HAZ), helping to minimize distortion and reduce thermal impact on the base material.

The technology also provides strong metallurgical bonding and enables precise localized restoration of damaged areas, making it suitable for large components with high dimensional and quality requirements such as hydropower turbine runners.

Restoration Results

After completing the restoration and all required inspections, the turbine runner is ready to return to service, helping improve operating stability and extend equipment service life.
