Phuong Dong has carried out numerous equipment restoration projects for hydropower plants, including the turbine runner of Alin B2 Hydropower Plant.
After a period of operation, the turbine runner developed various types of damage, including wear, chipping, blade deformation, and corrosion. Phuong Dong carried out inspection, machining, and restoration using PTA and Laser Cladding, with 410NiMo alloy powder as the filler material.
1. Inspection and Assessment of Existing Condition
After receiving the turbine runner, the component was thoroughly cleaned and the surface prepared for inspection. We then carried out dimensional inspection according to the technical drawings and defect detection using Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT).
Based on the inspection results, damaged areas were identified and marked, including the lower edges, areas in contact with the labyrinth ring, worn or chipped outer diameter surfaces, deformed blades, and corroded areas.
2. Surface Preparation and Pre-Machining
The deformed blades were straightened and adjusted to the required geometry.
For worn or damaged areas, grinding and turning were performed to remove defective material, creating a clean and suitable surface for the subsequent welding restoration process.
The selected filler material was 410NiMo alloy powder, which provides suitable mechanical properties and service performance for turbine runner restoration.
3. Restoration Using PTA and Laser Cladding
Depending on the location and severity of the damage, Phuong Dong selected the appropriate PTA or Laser Cladding process.
The cladding process accurately restores material to worn or damaged areas while creating a metallurgical bond with the base material.
The heat input is carefully controlled to minimize the heat-affected zone, reduce the risk of distortion and deformation, and achieve high restoration accuracy.
4. Grinding and Turning for Final Finishing
After completion of the cladding process, the turbine runner was ground and turned to restore the required dimensions according to the technical drawings.
The restored areas were precisely machined to meet the specified requirements for dimensions, geometry, and surface quality before proceeding to final inspection.
5. Dynamic Balancing
After final machining, the turbine runner underwent dynamic balancing to ensure rotational stability and minimize vibration during operation.
6. Final Inspection
Finally, the turbine runner underwent comprehensive dimensional inspection according to the technical drawings, followed by final Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT).
The inspection results confirmed that the runner met the requirements for dimensions and surface quality, with no detectable defects, making it ready for installation and return to service.
Phuong Dong’s Experience in Hydropower Equipment Restoration
In addition to the Alin B2 Hydropower Plant, Phuong Dong has carried out equipment restoration projects for numerous hydropower plants, including Huong Son, Ba Thuoc 1, Ba Thuoc 2, Nho Que 3, Khao Mang, Van Chan, A Luoi, Nam Cong, Nam Soi, Nam Vao, and many other hydropower projects.
By combining the advantages of Laser Cladding and PTA, Phuong Dong provides comprehensive hydropower equipment restoration solutions to restore original dimensions, improve wear resistance and service life, extend equipment lifetime, and optimize maintenance costs for customers.
