After years of operation in a hydropower environment, the blades of a Francis turbine runner are often affected by cavitation erosion and corrosion, leading to material loss, reduced turbine efficiency, and a shorter service life.
In this project, PHUONG DONG successfully restored a Francis turbine runner with a diameter of φ840 mm and a weight of 580 kg. The damaged areas were mainly located on the runner blades and were repaired using a combination of PTA (Plasma Transferred Arc) and Laser Cladding technologies. This approach restored the original blade profile while significantly improving resistance to cavitation and wear.
Restoration Process
- Inspect the turbine runner and assess the extent of damage.
- Grind away all cavitated, cracked, and corroded material to prepare the surface for welding.
- Perform PT (Liquid Penetrant Testing) to detect surface defects before restoration.
- Restore the damaged areas using PTA and Laser Cladding, depending on the location and degree of material loss, ensuring a strong metallurgical bond and a minimal heat-affected zone.
- Machine the restored surfaces to recover the original dimensions and blade profile.
- Conduct PT inspection after restoration to verify that no surface defects remain.
- Perform dynamic balancing to ensure the turbine runner meets technical requirements, providing stable operation with minimal vibration.
Upon completion of the entire restoration process, the turbine runner fully meets the required technical specifications and is ready to return to service. This restoration solution extends the service life of the component while significantly reducing costs compared with manufacturing or replacing a new turbine runner.
