Laser Cladding Phương Đông
Phuong Dong has successfully completed a project to repair steam turbine blade tips using laser cladding technology at Pha Lai Thermal Power Plant 1, located in Hai Duong Province. This is one of the largest coal-fired power plants in Northern Vietnam, with a total installed capacity of 440 MW across four generating units.
As part of the scheduled overhaul of Unit No.3, the turbine blade tips were found to be severely worn due to long-term operation under high temperature and pressure. Phuong Dong applied a high-power laser cladding solution, using Stellite powder- cobalt-based alloy – a material known for its superior resistance to wear, corrosion, and high temperatures, making it ideal for restoring turbine components operating in harsh environments.

Turbine blade tip repair process includes:
- Surface cleaning and preparation
- Wear inspection and evaluation
- Selection of appropriate cladding alloy (Stellite)
- Laser cladding with high precision
- Final machining
- Quality inspection using non-destructive testing methods: PT (liquid penetrant), MT (magnetic particle), and UT (ultrasonic)
Upon completion, Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) was conducted by the plant owner. Unit No.3 was successfully restored to full-load operation, delivering stable power to the national grid.
