Turbine shaft restoration is a critical part of maintenance for hydropower generating units. At Ba Thuoc 1 Hydropower Plant (Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam, with an installed capacity of ~60MW), the turbine shaft journal experienced severe wear after prolonged operation, posing risks to system performance and stability.
To address the issue, PHUONG DONG deployed a comprehensive on-site repair solution, minimizing both downtime and cost compared to full component replacement.
✅ On-site execution under challenging conditions
Despite significant challenges such as limited working space, restricted equipment access, and the inability to disassemble or transport the turbine, Phuong Dong’s engineering team quickly conducted on-site assessment, damage evaluation, and proposed an optimal repair strategy.
All restoration tasks were performed directly at the plant, ensuring system continuity and minimizing operational disruption.
✅ PTA hardfacing technology for shaft repair
The worn shaft surface was rebuilt using Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) hardfacing, applying specialized alloy powder with high hardness and superior wear resistance.
Following hardfacing, the surface was carefully ground, precisely machined, and realigned to match original design specifications, restoring full functionality and mechanical integrity.
