Stellite 6 & Stellite 12 Powders for Harsh Environments

Stellite 6 and Stellite 12 are two well-known cobalt-based alloy powders engineered for surface coating applications in demanding working conditions involving high friction, elevated temperatures, chemical corrosion, and cavitation. These powders are ideal for restoration, reinforcement, and extending service life of mechanical components in industries such as oil & gas, power generation, cement, chemical processing, and precision engineering.

Key Composition of Stellite 6 & 12 Powders:

  • Cobalt (Co) – Base element, providing toughness and heat resistance
  • Chromium (Cr) – Enhances corrosion and oxidation resistance
  • Tungsten (W) – Increases hardness and high-temperature wear resistance
  • Carbon (C) – Forms hard carbides to improve surface hardness
  • Nickel (Ni) & Iron (Fe) – Enhance overall strength and coating integrity

Thanks to this composition, coatings made from Stellite 6 and 12 offer excellent wear, heat, and corrosion resistance, even under aggressive industrial conditions involving high temperatures, chemicals, and mechanical stress.

Stellite 6 – Balanced Wear, Corrosion & Heat Resistance:

  • Post-weld hardness: ~38–44 HRC
  • Excellent resistance to adhesive and abrasive wear (with or without lubrication)
  • Good thermal shock resistance and oxidation resistance up to 800°C
  • Applications: Valve seats, shafts, sealing rings, cutting blades, components exposed to moderate wear

Stellite 12 – Higher Hardness & Superior Wear Resistance:

  • Post-weld hardness: ~44–50 HRC
  • Excellent resistance to sliding, galling, and cavitation wear
  • Performs well under high temperature and high pressure
  • Applications: Valve discs, mold dies, rotary shafts, heavy-load components

Common Advantages of Stellite 6 & 12:

  • Excellent adhesion and stable coating with minimal cracking
  • Outstanding resistance to corrosion and oxidation in chemical environments
  • Maintains hardness at high temperatures
  • Compatible with advanced coating technologies: Laser Cladding, PTA, HVOF, Plasma Spray

Typical Applications:

  • Industrial valves: valve stems, discs, and seats
  • Pump components: shafts, sleeves, and bearings
  • Tooling & dies: cutting edges, forming molds
  • Rotating and high-friction parts exposed to thermal and chemical stress
