Restoring D90 Bearing Holes on Gearbox Housings Using Laser Cladding Technology

During long-term operation, the bearing holes in gearbox housings often experience wear or deformation, causing misalignment and seriously affecting the transmission system. For large gearbox housings, the repair of small holes (D90) located deep inside presents challenges for both welding operations and fixture setup.

• The D90 hole is located on the inner surface of the gearbox housing.
• The narrow and deep cavity limits the working space, making it difficult to position the laser head precisely.
• Welding posture is challenging due to the need to operate through the small hole.
• The large and heavy gearbox housing requires specialized fixtures to secure and maintain accurate alignment.

Specialized Fixture and Laser Welding Torch

To access the D90 hole and ensure precision in this large gearbox housing, Phuong Dong uses a rotary fixture and a dedicated internal laser cladding head.

The fixture allows:

• Securing the entire gearbox housing on an industrial rotary table.
• Guiding the laser head precisely to the hole center, even in deep, confined positions.
• Maintaining absolute stability during cladding and adjusting the welding orientation.
• Checking hole alignment with a dial gauge before and after welding.

Thanks to the specialized fixture and internal laser cladding head, even small holes in restricted spaces can be accurately restored.

Restoration Process

1. Position the gearbox housing on the rotary table and lock it with locating pins.
2. Align the D90 hole using a dial gauge.
3. Perform Laser Cladding with the dedicated internal laser cladding head.
4. Finish machining the D90 hole after welding to ensure correct dimensions and tolerances.
5. Inspect concentricity, roundness, and surface roughness before delivery.
