What is 316L Stainless Steel Powder?
316L stainless steel is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel powder, primarily composed of:
- Chromium (Cr):00 – 18.00%
- Nickel (Ni):00 – 14.00%
- Molybdenum (Mo):00 – 3.00%
Thanks to this composition, 316L powder offers excellent corrosion resistance, especially in chloride-containing environments such as seawater, steam, mild acids, and alkaline solutions.
Key Technical Properties of 316L Cladding Powder
- Hardness after cladding: ≤ 95 HRB (≤ 217 HV, or ≤ 25 HRC)
- Tensile strength: ≥ 485 MPa
- Yield strength: ≥ 170 MPa
- Elongation at break: ≥ 40%
- High impact toughness – no cracking or brittleness at low temperatures
- Outstanding corrosion resistance in weak acids and marine environments
- Excellent weldability – forms uniform, defect-free clad layers
- Strong metallurgical bonding – suitable for various base materials (steel, cast iron…)
- Post-cladding machinability – easy to turn, grind, and polish
Typical Applications of 316L Powder in Laser Cladding
- Valves, shafts, pumps in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries
- Piping systems and equipment exposed to seawater and chloride environments
- Components that require hygienic surfaces and easy cleaning
- Restoration of corroded parts where hardness is not the top priority
Advantages of using 316L Stainless Steel for Laser Cladding
✅ Superior corrosion resistance in various working conditions
✅ Clean, smooth surface finish – ideal for food and medical applications
✅ No deformation or cracking after welding – high mechanical integrity
✅Excellent ductility and reworkability – suitable for parts requiring machining after cladding
✅ Cost-effective compared to replacing the entire part with solid stainless steel
